Revealing the layers of truth

Other than when I’m focusing with total concentration on my PC, my mind tends to wobble around like a plateful of jelly on a stairmaster. So I must say that I found Doug Veenhof’s recent workshop on single pointed concentration  particularly helpful.

Today, I re-read last week’s Asian Classics Institute course readings and it struck me that awareness, like an onion, has many layers to it. Even though the text was rationally familiar, it felt like I was reading it for the first time – with much greater clarity and many more “aha!” moments.

Beyond the mindfulness that the six- times book* brings, I’ve become aware of how I’ve unconsciously started applying the six perfections** of Buddhist practice without even realising it. The trick will be to make these actions conscious and intentioned.

At least it’s starting to feel less like theory and more like a really practical guide for everyday life. That, in itself is a great new awareness for me.

** Six perfections:  According to Buddhists these are: Generosity, Ethics, Patience, Joyful effort, Concentration and Wisdom.
