#8 May 2013 – Wisdom Awaits

We are all students and teachers

Happy Vesak Day!

There is wisdom everywhere; everyone and everything is teaching us something.  Moments of wisdom come in all forms and sizes and – like the weather in Singapore now-a-days – we can never predict whether events or ideas will capture our attention or whether they will disappear in the blink of an eye..

There is also no time limit on wisdom. One day we may go to a talk or read a book and then maybe many years later, while we are feeling relaxed or on the bus taking a nap, our mind flashes and that memory becomes a moment of understanding. I think this is a great way to build wisdom; using all sources and without getting too attached or hooked to a certain method.

Singapore is fortunate in having access to many different teachers from different spiritual and religious backgrounds. It is difficult sometimes for us to seek out different teachers, but there is a Zen story of a monk who kept pouring tea into a cup till it overflowed to demonstrate the point of having a “not full of yourself” mind so that we always leave room for more wisdom. It is a great reminder for us to attend talks given by new teachers with a really open and unbiased mind.

In fact, I have recently found myself in a teaching role – the Bhagavad Gita on Wednesdays at Temple St. I am always intrigued about what people are learning in class or on the internet later and whether I am adding any value at all. And – guess what – I am also learning. It is a very strange process – teaching makes your mind receive more wisdom and it helps you understand what you know better… and I am ever thankful for that, And now I understand why it is important to teach others and help others. Teaching builds knowledge for both students and teachers.

Lama Marut is back in Singapore next week . I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Ramesh.
