Mind the Gap

Photography is a passion of mine. It was only after getting a proper Canon camera that I started my photography quest. I wanted to become a digital expert.  Using Malcolm Gladwell’s well publicised theory that it takes 10000+ hours to be an expert, I worked out my 10000+ hours of photography would take about seven years – possibly faster – if this passion became my profession.  As I write this in 2013, I am getting close to 5000 hours, but I notice that my mind is still focused on the future goal.

In my quiet morning writing time, I’ve painfully realised that there is a gap between the final result and my expectations of that result. This ‘gap’ concept seems to occur and repeat all the time and perhaps by managing that gap I can become happier?

Probably, even as you read this you are experiencing this gap, thinking about your next meeting, next ‘doing’. And there it is – another GAP – keeping us from enjoying this moment.

Why am I going on about this and what has this got to do with leading a good life?

These gaps can be looked at as a source of real suffering and by paying attention to our mind when it perceives the gap, we can reconnect with reality; get closer to what really is. This takes time. A lot of time. But with large doses of hard work and daily practice… happiness can slowly appear.

All of us, including myself, need to learn more about managing this gap and I think it can help us all be a lot happier and calmer.  Fortunately help is at hand! Douglas Veenhof is dropping into Singapore next weekend to teach us techniques to help us pay more attention to life, rather than narrating it in our heads.
