Play as a Spiritual Practice

When I first heard in a teaching that play could be incorporated into a spiritual practice, I was not only relieved but really happy that the spiritual practice was not all work. After all, that’s why there is this proverb ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ right?

Summer time seems to be the perfect time to take a break from work – half the year has gone by, there is another half more to go. Some of us could already be feeling disinterested at work or our bodies could be yearning for a sunny vacation – beach, sun, sea or just hanging out with people we want to spend more time with.

When I am on vacation, I try to watch what is it about the vacation that I like? This often gives me a clue to what is missing from my work….. Is it doing the things I don’t feel like I have to do? Is it having time and space to laugh and be silly? Is it the carefreeness feeling of doing the things I like without having to watch the clock? Is it spending time on creative projects, allowing myself to make mistakes along the way?

The older I get, the more I realize the importance of relaxing into the practice – for long-term progress and sustainability of what we do. If we could learn from our vacations and incorporate the elements of play – the innocence, the wonder, humor, light heartedness, openness, playfulness, creativity, not taking ourselves too seriously….. etc., into our daily life, our life could be one big holiday !

#47_May 2016 – Take a Break

Take a Break.

….before you have to. For some reason holding down two jobs, doing charity work helping small businesses, managing a household and planning an international move was not enough of a signal to clear some space for some inner work.
There are times when stretching yourself with multiple challenges leads to great breakthroughs, whether in knowledge, understanding or the sense of wholeness that comes through helping someone else achieve their goals. Other times you may be filling your time, running about being ‘busy busy’ because you are avoiding being with yourself, being quiet; facing the reality of who you really are in that moment.
For me, during those few months when one year ends and another begins – in this case 2016 – I was transitioning from being in one country to moving to another, physically and mentally. I became disconnected and distracted by to-do lists rather than taking time to honour the momentum of this change. In the past, if I didn’t find space for myself, events would force it on me.
This time the first whisper was when I fell down a very long flight of stone steps at the new Art Museum on the Padang. I apologise for scaring everyone in the ticket hall who had to witness my messy tumble. Other than severe bruises and a chipped elbow, I was fine.
Did I listen? The louder klaxon came early in January when I turned my ankle and broke it. So now, no choice; I had to take a break. Literally. I recognised the situation that had been created by my actions immediately whilst waiting for the x-ray, and laughed. Don’t wait for the whisper, take that break.

The Mind Illuminated: a 6-week Meditation Course, with Jaki Fisher

6-week Meditation Course

We’ve all heard great things about meditation and yet somehow it’s so hard to get started and even harder to keep it going. 

Over six Mondays, we will work together to establish a meditation practice that we can stick to, using instructions from a new, comprehensive book on meditation, The Mind Illuminated by John Yates. The method in this book combines findings from neuroscience with traditional Buddhist meditation techniques and practices so that meditation becomes a fresh and exciting exploration of our minds. 

Jaki is currently studying with John as part of a meditation teacher training programme and is really happy to share what she has found to be a rewarding and joyful and way to train the mind. 

The method we will learn can easily be combined with meditation practices from other teachers, traditions and faiths.

The one you Feed

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’

The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’

Mindful Living, with Charu Ramesh: a 4-week Middle Way Center course in March

Mindful Living

This 4-week course will guide us in incorporating mindfulness into our lives. The course is designed by Lama Marut, based on his translations of various texts like Buddha’s Mahasatipatthana Sutta, Kamalashila’s Bhavana Krama, Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life and Svatmarama’s Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

The sessions will explore teachings from these texts and include practical exercises on how we can use these teachings to lead a more mindful life. The structure of the sessions is as follows:

  1. Session 1 – Moving towards a mindful lifestyle
  2. Session 2 – What is mindfulness and how to cultivate it
  3. Session 3 – Understanding and working with the mind and thoughts
  4. Session 4 – Translating mindfulness into action

While each session in itself will give an idea of mindfulness, for a complete understanding of working with it in daily life, we encourage you to attend all four sessions.

About the teacher:

Charu Ramesh practices as a classical homeopath, an I Ching interpreter and a life guide. She has studied Buddhist Psychology with Caroline and David Brazier and teaches regular dharma classes for ASC. She helps people work with relationships, transitions and the issues that life keeps throwing at all of us. The main thread that runs through her work is empowering people by helping them take responsibility for their lives.

Reflections

Having our teachers Lama Marut and Lama Cindy here last month has been so wonderful and inspiring. Every time they teach, I find my practice and understanding open up in new ways and taking new directions. As the year comes to a close, I’ll be taking some time to reflect on these teachings and how I can really live in the truth of what I learned. I invite you to do the same, and if you’ve been inspired like I have, do join our sangha by becoming a member.

I’m also very excited to be presenting our last event of the year: a midnight yoga and meditation practice on New Year’s Eve. Check out details below or on our website. I hope to see you there!

New Year’s Eve Midnight Yoga and Meditation

Vaishali Iyer completed her 250-hour YTT in 2011, and has since been teaching Hatha Yoga and meditation in Europe. The Relationship between Shiva and Shakti in the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Join Lama Marut and Cindy Lee for this weekend workshop to learn simple meditation techniques, taken from a classic Sanskrit text, to discover your inner Divine nature. In each session we will practise easy but profound mindfulness methods to instantly drop into your true nature any time and anywhere during the day.
