Spirituality and Art: A Two-Week Special, with Vaishali Iyer and Charu Ramesh

Jan Arts Talks Flyer

Week 1: Discovering the Sacred in Art, with Vaishali Iyer

An exploration of the meaning and purpose of dharma art: how can creative activities like painting, sculpture, dance and performance take us deeper into our true nature? Who do we become as we engage in artistic practice and how can this experience transform our world?

This talk draws on Vaishali’s research for her dissertation on Tibetan artistic and spiritual culture, as well as Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s course on dharma art and his book True Perception.

Week 2: Zen and the Appreciation of Art, with Charu Ramesh

Based on the writings of Roshi John Daido Loori, this session will explore what it means to engage with an object from an inner centre of stillness. It will also include an interactive exercise on looking at an art piece.

“The arts of Zen are not intended for utilitarian purposes, or for purely aesthetic enjoyment, but are meant to train the mind, indeed, to bring it into contact with ultimate reality.” – D.T. Suzuki
